What is homeopathy?  In the U.S., there is a growing interest in homeopathy as a safe alternative to the persistent, toxic side effects of drugs used in modern medicine. People are returning to homeopathy because they now understand that in order to become healthy we must work with the root cause of disease and not just the symptoms. Many Americans are literally "sick" of drugs which create more toxic complications and because they interfere with the body's natural ability to heal itself. Suppressing, or merely removing symptoms, is a temporary solution at best. Homeopathy addresses the "whole" person naturally and is an effective long-term solution to modern states of disease. Homeopathy has been the focus of scientific research for decades as new ways of diagnosing and prescribing have developed. One recent development is the use of homeopathic complexes which allow us to treat ourselves and our families for numerous common ailments such as colds, fever, allergies, headache, flu, cough, sinus, earache, menstrual problems, indigestion, bladder irritation, etc. These ailments are very simply and effectively relieved by the use of homeopathic complexes. Homeopathic medicine can be used without danger because it is not toxic and has no known side effects. Homeopathic remedies have an unlimited shelf life. 2. Who can take homeopathic remedies?  Homeopathy can be used effectively by everyone, from babies and children to adults, including women during pregnancy. Even your pets can use homeopathy! Homeopathic medicines promote the body's natural ability to heal. When prescribed appropriately, they are safe, non-toxic and non-addictive. They can be taken alongside drugs prescribed by your doctor and will not interfere with their beneficial action. As your condition improves, you may be able to safely reduce your conventional medication, thereby avoiding the unwanted effects that sometimes accompany the long-term use of drugs. As with any condition, be sure and consult your health practitioner before making changes to your conventional medication.  3. What are homeopathic remedies made from? Homeopathic remedies are made from plants such as the Dandelion, some animal substances such as the venom of the bee, and different active and naturally occurring substances such as Mother of Pearl, beneficial metals such as iron and magnesium salts, and in general from substances that have a known, curative effect. Every homeopathic remedy has a specific name and a potency symbol. The name is the Latin name of the original substance. Example: The Latin name of the Dandelion is "Taraxacum dens leonis," or Taraxacum, which means "Lion's tooth."  4. What is attenuation?  The attenuation of the remedy is indicated by a symbol consisting of a number and a letter. The number indicates the number of times the remedy has been diluted and the letter indicates the kind of diluting step that has been used. For instance, the letter "x" means that the step was ten fold. In Europe the letter "D" is used for the ten-fold step. There are other steps as well, such as "C" for the hundred-fold step. Another hundred-fold step is "K." We have found that the ideal potencies for self-help are 10x and 15x.  5. How are homeopathic remedies sold?  Homeopathic remedies come in different forms. The most common are liquid and pellet forms. Pellets are small sugar balls that have been saturated with the liquid remedy. Complex remedies come most commonly in liquid form, in a bottle with a dropper. The dropper is used to place the drops on or under the tongue, and is the easiest way to administer a homeopathic remedy. Another way is to put the drops in a small amount of well or spring water before drinking.  6. How does homeopathy work?  The body has receptors that adjust to every environmental change; these constant adjustments often occur without our even being aware of it until there is an aggravation. The adjustments made in the body to deal with these aggravates occurs on a very minute level and produces symptoms to let us know when something is wrong. Homeopathy's healing power also works on this miniscule level to help the body's system stay in balance and heal itself. Homeopathy works on a principle known as 'the law of similar' or 'like cures like'. This law states that a substance that can cause a disease can also relieve it. For example, coffee - or Coffea as it is known in Latin - is a stimulant that can cause temporary insomnia. Coffea may be used in minute poetized (i.e. homeopathic) doses to relieve that insomnia. Another example is that chopping onions can cause your nose and eyes to stream with abundant amounts of water. The onion - Allium cepa - can be used homeopathically to treat colds and hayfever where the main symptoms include runny eyes and nose.  7. What Homeopathic potency should I take?  Homeopathic remedies are prepared through a process called potentization. Potentization involves a series of systematic dilutions and successions (a forceful shaking action). Potentization is important, because it removes all risk of chemical toxicity while activating a remedy substance and enabling it to affect the body therapeutically. Homeopathic potencies are designated by the combination of a number and a letter (for example, 10x or 30C). The number refers to the number of dilutions the tincture has undergone within a series to prepare that remedy. The letter refers to the proportions used in each dilution of the series (the Roman numeral X means 10, and the Roman numeral C means 100), as well as the number of successions the vial of solution undergoes in each successive stage. Higher potencies are not always better. Homeopathy's founder, Samuel Hahnemann, only used potencies under 30X for his patients. At Newton Homeopathic we most often use 10x for our remedies.  8. Does homeopathy interact with drugs?  There is no direct interaction with drugs. But all medical drugs are toxic and can therefore reduce the efficacy of the homeopathic treatment.  9. Can homeopathy be taken with supplements?  Supplements and homeopathy complement each other because absorption will be improved.  10. Can homeopathy be taken with herbs?  There is no interaction with herbs, and homeopathy and herbs complement each other because absorption will be improved, but they must be taken separately.  11. Are there any side effects from using homeopathy?  Because of the minute dosage properties of homeopathic remedies, there are no toxic side effects or tissue destruction from them. However, it is recommended that the use of homeopathic remedies for certain conditions should be supervised by a skilled practitioner to avoid a healing crisis by the patient. In certain acute illnesses, the appropriate remedy will work within minutes. In chronic conditions, the effects are slow to appear. Generally, the longer the duration of the illness, the longer it takes for the homeopathic remedy to take effect and cure. If symptoms persist, consult your health care provider.  12. Which remedy should I take?  Every remedy is different. Each remedy has a certain "symptom picture" associated with it. The correct remedy to take is the one which has a symptom picture that most closely matches the symptoms you are exhibiting. Since it is often difficult to identify the exact single remedy for a set of symptoms. Newton's homeopathic combination remedies are one way to help limit the remedy selection. Newton's product labeling system makes this easy, i.e., "Headache" or "Indigestion-Gas". We take some of the most commonly indicated single remedies for a specific ailment and combine them to create a remedy. Your body uses what it needs from the remedy and the rest passes through your system, therefore, you cannot overdose on homeopathy.  13. How do I take it?  For Newton products, give infants and small children 1-3 drops (or pellets) at a time. Children over age 10 and adults, take 6 drops (or 5-6 pellets) at a time. Place drops or pellets in mouth, or in some well, spring, or distilled water. It is recommended that you administer the remedies separate from a meal if possible.
